Disingenuous NYT article on voting irregularities
This is an article from the NY Times that “neatly” brushes aside any criticisms of the problems with the voting process in that little election we just had, without going into any detail about what the concerns with e-voting machines actually are.
As a computer scientist, I feel that it’s my responsibility to say that even if the process looked like it went smoothly (and from my perspective, it doesn’t), there is simply NO WAY TO KNOW IF EVERY VOTE WAS COUNTED PROPERLY. None of the systems involved have anything even remotely approaching what I would consider reasonable safeguards against errors, fraud, cracking, social engineering, or any of the myriad other problems that could have occurred. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, it doesn’t even appear that a threat analysis has even been formally done. This is a huge issue, and I think it’s irresponsible of the Times to gloss over it like this.
