I am a big fan of the Omnivore's Dilemma though. I found the book to be not significantly better than the original NYT Magazine article it was based on – Unhappy Meals. If you haven't already, you might enjoy checking out <A href="http://www.michaelpollan.com/indefense.php" _In Defense of Food_ by Michael Pollan. It is a great read and has some interesting history if you are interested in these issues. They aren't as good as a real farmer's market, but we only have those from May to October around here and frankly, they leave much to be desired. Standard fare - lettuce, peppers, onions. Nothing new or interesting. There's a local rancher, but I can't buy from him because he gives an 11% discount on New York Strips the week of 9/11 every year and I think that's tres tacky. It's not as local as I'd like, but it's a hell of a lot better than the regular supermarket. I got some red bell peppers last week that were just breathtaking ... actually, everything I've bought there has seemed much more "alive" than the produce at the regular local supermarket. It's not all organic, but it's such an improvement .. and the prices are so much better ... that I'm willing to compromise. The organic stuff at the regular supermarket is crap anyway. Really is.
